| The Greg Waits group Extraordinary Jazz |
Trombonist/composer/arranger Greg Waits is a veteran of a wide range of performance experiences. He has performed with ex-Miles Davis pianist Red Garland, Benny Goodman, the Harry Connick, jr. big band, the Woody Herman orchestra, Joe Williams and many others. He has recorded CDs with Grupo Iratzu and Soul Caribe (salsa bands), the Dallas Jazz Orchestra, pianist Joe McBride, et al. He holds a Bachelor and Masters degree in Jazz studies) from the University of North Texas, where he was in the One ‘o clock Lab Band (appearing on Lab ’81 and Lab ’92). From ’81 - ’84 he was a member of the USMA Jazz Knights of West Point, New York. On two separate occasions, Greg resided in then-West Germany, free lancing with his own groups as well as with other bands. Greg is the author of “Advanced Flexibility Studies for the Jazz Trombonist” (Gore publishing), which is distributed by Jamey Aebersold’s Jazz Aids catalog, and Robert King Music. He is a clinician for Bach Trombones, which he plays exclusively. Featured saxophonist Dave Liebman is a widely recorded and heralded veteran of the jazz world, having played and recorded with Miles Davis, Elvin Jones, Dave Holland, et al. He is a highly respected jazz educator as well. His current group regularly tours internationally. It is with great pleasure that Greg features Dave on his debut CD. Trumpeter/producer Larry Spencer is a veteran of the D/FW music scene, with experience in studio jingles as well as performing in a wide range of live situations, from jazz and salsa dates to Dallas Summer Musicals. He is (with Richard Murrow) the co-leader of his own group, “Brazzology”, a tuba/trumpet based group which recently released its first CD. He is sponsored by UMI Instruments, as a Conn artist and clinician. Guitarist Tim Miller is a wonderful player. Greg heard about him via his performances at the U of North Texas. His is a fresh and interesting style, in Greg’s opinion: “a cross between John Scofield and Pat Metheny, leaning towards Scofield." Tim currently is free-lancing in Paris, France, and is a member of drummer Aldo Romano’s group. Pianist Dan Haerle is no stranger to the jazz world. He has been closely aligned with Jazz education for years. He has been a staff member of the Stan Kenton camps, and a staff member of many other jazz camps as well. Dan has many jazz books published (Warner Bros), and is a faculty member of the U of North Texas. He was a welcome contributor to this project. Bass player John Adams is a top call player in the D/FW area, extremely comfortable on 5 and 6 string electric basses as well as on acoustic. He is a veteran of the Woody Herman orchestra, and was in the UNT One ‘o Clock Lab Band with Greg in 1980. John recently released his own CD (Jump Shot) on which Greg appears as guest soloist. Much in demand drummer Ed Soph is a world renowned player. He is a veteran of the Woody Herman orchestra, the Clark Terry big band, and the Bill Watrous Manhattan Wildlife Refuge. In addition, he has recorded many albums with top flight jazz small groups, including Dave Liebman, Joe Henderson. He has several jazz drum books published, and is a highly skilled proponent of the lost art of playing with brushes. He is a Yamaha clinician and is on the faculty at the U of North Texas. Greg is very pleased to have Ed on this CD with him. Herman orchestra, the Clark Terry Big Band, |
